Asthma is a chronic lung disease where airways in the lungs become narrowed and swollen, making it difficult to breathe. The condition can be triggered or flared up, causing symptoms of wheezing, shortness of breath, and/or difficulty breathing. No one really knows what causes asthma, but in some cases there is a link to family history of asthma, allergies, or eczema.
Some patients may experience asthma symptoms after exposure to a trigger. Typical triggers can include: dogs, cats, mold, pollen, cold air, smoke, and viral illnesses. Avoiding the trigger, if known, is an important step for decreasing asthma flare-ups.
Prescription medications can help if avoidance alone still produces symptoms. Our medical team can prescribe preventive and quick relief medications to help control asthma symptoms.
We recommend using a spacer, like an Aerochamber, when using metered-dose inhalers. We also recommend the use of a peak flow meter to monitor breathing. Our medical team can provide more information on these devices.
