  • How can Lemonaid Health help if I experience migraines?

Our migraine service provides you with a convenient and affordable way to manage your symptoms, and empowers you to do so appropriately and safely.

You can get the care and advice you need online without having to go to a traditional doctor’s office. Our goal is to decrease the frequency and severity of your migraines while minimizing medication side effects.

  • What should I know about migraines and how can Lemonaid Health help treat them?

A migraine is a painful headache that may occur with sensitivity to light, sound, or smell. The headache usually occurs on one side and may cause nausea and vomiting. These symptoms can impact your ability to do everyday tasks.

The exact cause of migraines is unknown. Females are more likely to get migraines than males, and in most instances migraines are inherited so your genetics might be a factor. Specific triggers can increase the likelihood of a migraine episode for some people. Triggers can be physical, emotional or environmental.

Our medical team can prescribe three categories of migraine treatment. Medications taken daily to prevent migraines include topiramate, amitriptyline, propranolol, and metoprolol. Sumatriptan and rizatriptan are medications used to treat an active migraine episode. If you experience migraines with nausea, metoclopramide or ondansetron may be included in your treatment plan.

  • Can I use the Lemonaid Health migraine service?

You can use our service if you're between the ages of 18 and 49 years old, and have already been diagnosed with migraines by a healthcare provider in person.

  • If it’s not in your best interest to use Lemonaid Health based on what you tell us about your health history or symptoms, we’ll advise you to see a healthcare provider in person.

Our medical team is not able to treat all patients. If you have a history of hemiplegic migraines (causing muscle weakness), uncontrolled high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, heart disease, stroke, other cardiovascular disease, or are pregnant, then we recommend that you see a healthcare provider in person. See our migraine service page for more details.

If you’re currently experiencing the worst headache or migraine of your life, this can be a life-threatening emergency. Please contact 911 immediately or go to your nearest emergency room or hospital.

  • Can Lemonaid Health treat migraines remotely?

Our doctors and nurse practitioners can treat your migraine based on your history and self-reported symptoms. Our medical team follows strict guidelines to make sure we only treat you when it's safe and appropriate to do so. It’s important that you answer our questions fully and truthfully, and read any information we provide.

If, for any reason, our doctor or nurse practitioner thinks it’s not safe to treat you, we’ll ask you to see a healthcare provider in person.

  • How do I complete a visit for the migraine service?

    1. Create a Lemonaid Health Account.
    2. Complete our simple health questionnaire.
    3. Save your payment information - we won’t charge your card until after your consultation. Many HSA/FSA cards can be used at checkout.
    4. Complete a short consultation with a Lemonaid Health doctor or nurse practitioner. A phone call may be required depending on your state.

Our medical team will then determine if treatment with medication is safe and appropriate for you.

If we prescribe treatment, we can ship your medication directly to you from our own Lemonaid Pharmacy. Shipping is discreet, fast and free. Alternatively, our medical team can send the prescription electronically to your local pharmacy.

  • Are the migraine treatments provided by Lemonaid Health safe and effective?

There are risks and benefits to taking any medication. It’s important to answer our health questionnaire fully and truthfully so that our medical team can help you make an informed decision about whether the benefits of a medication outweigh the potential risks.

The medications we prescribe are effective and work for most people when used correctly. Please read the information we provide in your treatment plan to learn more about the risks and benefits of treatment.

  • How quickly do migraine medications work?

Sumatriptan or rizatriptan start to work within one hour to treat an active migraine episode.

Preventative medications may need to be taken daily for at least two months to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.

Ondansetron and metoclopramide can help reduce nausea in about 30 minutes.

  • Why do you need to know my blood pressure and heart rate for the migraine service?

We may ask for recent and accurate blood pressure or heart rate measurements as part of our health questions to help determine if migraine medications are safe and appropriate for you. It can be dangerous to take certain migraine medications if your blood pressure or heart rate are below or above a certain level.

  • How do I measure my blood pressure for the migraine service?

You can use an at-home blood pressure monitor that has a cuff for the upper arm and a label on the box stating ‘clinically validated’. We don’t recommend using finger or wrist monitors, as they tend to be less accurate. Always read the instructions carefully.

Many pharmacies have a machine where you can accurately measure your blood pressure for free.

Here are two links to help you find your nearest  Higi machine and Pursuant Health kiosk. Both machines are FDA approved to check blood pressure accurately.

Rest for at least 5 minutes before taking your readings. Wait at least 30 minutes after smoking, eating, drinking caffeine, or exercising.

Take 2 readings, at least one minute apart, on both arms and give us the highest number you record.

  • How do I measure my heart rate for the migraine service?

At the wrist, lightly press the index and middle fingers of one hand on the opposite wrist, just below the base of the thumb. Count the number of beats in 15 seconds and multiply by four to calculate your heart rate.

  • How do I measure my blood pressure at home for the migraine service?

You can use an at-home blood pressure monitor that has a cuff for the upper arm and a label on the box stating ‘clinically validated’. We don’t recommend using finger or wrist monitors, as they tend to be less accurate. Always read the instructions carefully.
