Most UTIs are caused by bacteria infecting the bladder, but the infection can move into the kidneys and become more serious if treatment is delayed. UTIs are more common in females and the symptoms can sometimes be confused with symptoms caused by other vaginal infections. The symptoms of a bladder infection include pain or burning during urination, increased frequency or urgency of urination, or blood in the urine. Kidney infections can also include fever, nausea or vomiting, and back pain.
Urinary tract infections can often be treated with antibiotics taken for a full course of 3 to 7 days.
